Regional SMS Trg Programme

The `Intro to SMS in NZ Aviation' regional courses were held at:

Hamilton, 2nd Sept, at the CTC Training Centre;

This course was our first and was a smallish group.  Reps from:-  Super Air, Pacific Aerospace, CTC.

One person is looking at integrating his OSH with SMS. Another is going to `risk' review his `1200' strips.

Ardmore Airfield, 25th Sept, at Auckland Aero Club;

Several Reps (from each) and a very enthusiastic group from:- Ardmore Flying School, Auckland Aero Club, Heliharvest, Flightline, and Hawker Pacific.

We performed a very revealing `Brainstorming Exercise' using one our techniques.  One Operator asked if their CFI could sit-in partway through the course.

Wanaka, 14th Oct, St Johns Rooms CANCELLED (ref Queenstown early Dec 2009);

Palmerston North, Thurs, 29th Oct,
Conference Room at `The Republic' of Palmerston Nth Airport;

A great Course was attended by: ACE-Aviation, Fieldair, HELISERV, HELISIKA, Kapiti Disticts Aero, Manawatu Flight Training, Taskfire Protection Services, Wanganui Aero (Work).

We were privileged to have the late Hugh Barclay contribute, challenge and compliment us in these Roadshow initiatives.

Whangarei, Monday 23rd Nov, Quantum Aviation Rooms;

Reps came from: NEST (Northland Emergency Services Trust), Northland Helicopters and Quantum Aviation.  The Group have taken part in a Risk Review relating to `Runway Incursions'.

As a result of the course they have formed their own Airport (User) Cluster Group - well done.

Queenstown, 14th Dec, at St John's Rooms;

The numbers were down on this one - but the calibre of folk attending from Air Safaris (from Lake Tekapo) and Southern Lakes Helicopters (recently merged with Southwest Helicopters) was impressive.

We were able to get down and really mix the theory and practise to make application easier and relevant.

General Comments

  1. For General Aviation `safety management systems' legislation will be gazetted about a year after the `big boys' (ie. the 121 Operators, 139 Airports and 145 Maintenance).  We have been very impressed with the interest taken by many in GA (fixed wing and rotary).  Well done!!

  2. There is a lot of good work (and some quite innovative/simple and effective) being done.  `Generalising' - those who are involved (and making things work) in a Cluster (User) Group appear to be further along the SMS Journey.

  3. SMS is a journey - its a development of `risk' thinking/processes and a focus on a more dynamic and participative `business culture'.  Those who admit to the journey are probably further along than those who say "we have SMS".

  4. There has been the odd moan about the Regulator - but mostly folk have said `they're OK, not many issues'.  However, there is a plea for the CAANZ (and its Auditors) to lead more, change within and be more consistent in the field.

  5. If you can muster a group of about 7 to 10 colleagues (from businesses around you), and you have a room, we will endeavour to run a course.

  6. For those who would like us to review their manuals, their systems (maybe attend a Safety Mtg) and provide some mentoring pls give us a call to work out the logistics and chargings.
